- This event began in 1926, and has been played over the years at various venues in Southern California. Since 1973, the grand Riviera County Club has been its home
- The title sponsor is now Northern Trust who will be the named sponsor through 2012
- The tournament record for the event is -20, which was accomplished by Lanny Watkins in 1985
- A number of players have won the event on two occasions. Two legends, Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan, have each won it three times. But, there is a four time winner, and that is Lloyd Mangrum who took home the trophy in 1949, 1951, 1953, and 1956
- Riviera has been good to international players. Since 1997, 7 international players have won there, including back-to-back titles for Canadian Mike Weir in 2003 and 2004
