Fitness for golfers ... an important club in your bag.

It has long been argued whether golf was an athletic endeavor and if golfers should be considered as athletes. In 2016 golf will be back in the Olympics...maybe that helps answer that question.

Core-Core-Core, It's all about the core and that is the theme I'd like to cover in this article. As you coil into the backswing your core will play several key roles. Balance and stability of your body are first on the list as that will allow for a strong consistent position of your swing. When you examine all of the great golf swings, there is a motion on the start of the down swing that has the hips turn toward the target that starts the power move.

As you begin the downswing the core will allow for stable weight shift as the body creates power, not just hitting the ball with your hands and arms. Similar to a baseball player starting to make a move with the bat, he will start with the lower body and the core with the hands and arms more- quiet as they start the downswing.

Next we want you to get to a proper balanced follow-through and a stronger core will allow this. All of this is made even more evident when you consider that golf is played on uneven surfaces, uphill, downhill and side-hill...let your core be your friend.  Lest we forget that a round of golf can take up to 5 hours to play and if you have a stronger core and better fitness, you will not be as likely to be tired and make a lazy swing when you get to the 16th or 17th hole.

Now here is an idea for a solution...check out my web-site, www.CynthiaFit4You.COM and look at the videos about use of the stability ball. Crunches, sit-up type motions and "Functional Movement" twisting and balance will help you build a stronger core.  Your core is a complex series of muscles, extending far beyond you abs, including everything besides your arms and legs. Another great technique with the stability ball to build your core is with the use of a medicine ball. These are very affordable and come in weights that vary.
